RESIDENTIAL PROGRAMMES OF TRAINING
The college has residential programnmes for students who can attend classes at the campus, Currently the college has three programmes which are:
1.  DIPLOMA IN JOURNALISM

  • This is a two -year programme with majors in the following subjects:
  • Radio Broadcasting
  • Television Broadcasting
  • Photojournalism
  • TV and Video Production
  • Press Law
  • Public Relations
  • Mass Communication
  • Research Methodology
  • News Reporting
  • News Editing
  • Current Affairs & News Analysis
  • Computer Application
  • Institution Methods & Facilities
  • Communications Skills

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum entry requirements in this course are:

  • At least two principal passes in form VI examination
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English language or
  • Advanced Certificate in journalism of RCT or equivalent Qualification from recognized institutions.

2. ADVANCED CERTIFICATE IN JOURNALISM
This is a one-year programme aimed to prepare reporters for prints and electronic media and to give them qualifications for further education. The contents of the programme are:

  • Broadcasting
  • Media History
  • Photojournalism
  • Video Production
  • Media Law
  • Public Relations
  • Mass Communication
  • News Reporting Current affairs & News Analysis
  • Computer Application
  • Communication Skills       

ENTRY QUALIFICATION
Minimum entry qualifications in this course are

  • Completion of Form IV with at least 5 passes , including English and Kiswahili subjects or
  • Completion of Basic Certificate in journalism of RCT

3. INTERMEDIATE CERTIFICATE IN JOURNALISM
This is a 6-month programme studied for three months by course work and another three months in fieldwork attachment.  Those who complete the course get inside ground of the profession qualified by extensive practical in the filed.  The contents of the programme are:

  • Broad casting
  • Photojournalism
  • TV and video production
  • press law
  • public relations
  • news reporting
  • current affairs& news analysis
  • computer applications
  • communication skills
  • three (3) months field practical work

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
to qualify for entry into the programme, one must have successfully completed secondary education with good understanding of both English and Kiswahili languages.

4. BASIC CERTIFICATE IN JOURNALISM
this course is studies for a period of three months. the course is aimed to impart basic knowledge for one to be proceed with further studies at advanced certificate or diploma level. The contents of the programme are the same as for intermediate certificate in journalism but field attachment does not apply here.

ENTRY QUALIFICATIONS
same as intermediate certificate in journalism.


 

TELEVISION PRODUCTION
This course aims at developing skills and competency necessary for producing  quality TV programs. The objective is to equip students with organizational skills and directing techniques in all areas of TV production. Special emphasis is given to popular TV genres. The course is designed to provide both theoretical and practical knowledge through lectures film / video analysis and production exercises. Presenters, producers/directors, editors of Camera operators.

  3. Scripting
  4. Single camera techniques
  5. Scripting
  6. Single camera shooting
  7. Mult – camera treatment

WEEK 2

  1. TV and VIDEO Concepts
  2. TV Organization units
  3. Video production units
  4. The technical world
  5. The production team

WEEK 3

  1. Presentation of programs on TV
  2. Exercise Presentation (Direct pieces to Camera)

WEEK 4

  1. Story boards / TV Scripts
  2. Preview of Presentation

WEEK 5

  1. TV genres: Documentary.
  2. Researching for Documentary

WEEK 6

  1. TV genres: New Talk shows, Interviews etc.
  2. Filming documentary.

WEEK 7

  1. TV Genres: Music and Musical programs in TV
  2. Editing Documentary

WEEK  8

  1. Demonstrations in TV
  2. Filming selected TV Demonstrations

WEEK 9

  1. Planning a TV Program
  2. Production analysis

WEEK 10

    • Videotape recording basis
    • The videotape recording process
    • Practical Editing

    STUDENTS ASSIGNMENTS &GRADING CRITERIA.
    All video &TV production students will be responsible for the outlined assignments.

    • Daily participation Grade.

    Each day a student attends class and was productively working toward the assignment objectives for that day  will receive points for class participation. Absence, tardy  and failure to participate, will result to O points for that day. All excused absence points can make –up during the 30-minute conference period after school while working on related classroom assignments.

         2.    With a chosen partners ( groups of five or more), students are required to produce a given practical work on location or in studio.

    • Topic, stories  or ideas must be pre approved by the tutor.
    • The second approval is required after the script is finished prior to moving forward with the physical part of shooting and editing footage
    • Failure to meet deadline will result in loss of 50 pts.3days after deadline will lead to Incomplete course work.

    REQUIREMENTS.
    1. Production of 30 min documentary film.
    2. A paper on planning a TV program.
    3. Individual mini DV Tape is required.
